Hydraulic fluids are fluids that uses the force of the actual non-compressing fluid to create both a flow of force and protection. Suspension fluids are a type of hydraulic fluid that absorbs and dampens the forces exerted on the suspension while it is moving. The fluids absorb some of the downward force in conjunction with the spring to lessen the shock on the down-stroke and conversely it dampens the springs rebound following compression. By slowing the up-stroke and absorbing some of that energy, the oil creates a smoother ride within the cockpit of the vehicle.
Power steering fluids is the hydraulic fluid that transmits the power in your steering system. This allows you to turn your steering wheel with ease. It also protects the steering system from wear and tear so it is advisable to check your steering fluid regularly and top it up as required. Most manufacturers advise replacing your fluid every two years or 24,000 miles – whichever comes first. There are many different types of power steering fluid, so you must make sure you buy the right product.
